Janet Ang on amendment bills for tougher laws to tackle money mules, Singpass abusers
The number of people being scammed to release their bank or Singpass details for nefarious purposes, and the value of resulting losses, are cause for great concern. Even more worrying is the fact that some Singaporeans are willing participants in such crimes. NMP Janet Ang said this in Parliament on Monday (May 8). She said proposed legislative changes will give appropriate powers to the authorities to take action and hopefully deter people who think they can make easy money. However, she raised several questions. These included possible challenges in enforcement, how Singapore will work with overseas counterparts to identify and prosecute offenders, what further measures are planned to better protect digital identities and the costs these will incur, and what further support will be given to victims to recover their monies. Ms Ang spoke during the debate on the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) (Amendment) Bill and Computer Misuse (Amendment) Bill.
