Janil Puthucheary on minimum age for children to use social media

Most major social media services require users to be at least 13 years old to register for an account. However, it is technically difficult to carry out age verification and this must also be balanced with concerns over data protection, especially regarding children’s data. As a result, global standards have not yet been set, said Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information Janil Puthucheary in Parliament on Wednesday (Oct 5). In answer to an MP’s questions, he said Singapore will be introducing a proposed code of practice for online safety, with extra safeguards for young users. His ministry will continue to monitor global developments and consult extensively, including on the issue of age verification. Parents are also urged to play an active part in guiding their children on the appropriate age to start using social media.
