Jasmin Lau on smartphone ban in secondary schools
One week into Singapore’s ban on secondary school students using smartphones during school hours, parents have been by and large supportive, said Minister of State for Education Jasmin Lau. Replying to an MP’s question in parliament on Tuesday (Jan 13), she said that under protocols for emergency communication, parents and children can contact each other if needed through the school's general office, so “there is no need for students to own or use a handphone”. Ms Lau added that her ministry will continue to work with schools on implementation to ensure that the ban improves the experience of both teachers and students.
