Jessica Tan on Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill

09:36 Min

The Government's support packages taken in totality do in fact delay, and in some cases, completely remove the impact of the planned GST increase, said MP Jessica Tan. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Nov 7), she urged Singaporeans not to miss the "bigger picture", which is the need for funding. She urged the Government to focus on the sandwiched generation as it has to care for young children and aged parents and relatives, as well as bear greater financial strain with rising costs. While many do live in HDB flats and qualify for most of the components of Government support, there are those who live in private property that are above the annual value threshold for eligibility. She urged the Government to review and calibrate the annual value eligibility criterion for appropriate support schemes for these segments. She also stressed the need to continue to keep Singapore's economy strong and to provide quality jobs for Singaporeans.
