Koh Poh Koon on mattresses in migrant worker dormitories
There have been no cases of migrant workers in dormitories being denied mattresses if they want them, said Senior Minister of State for Manpower Koh Poh Koon in Parliament on Tuesday (May 9). Replying to an MP’s question, Dr Koh said his ministry does not prohibit the use of mattresses in workers’ dorms and all dormitory operators are required to provide each resident with a bed, which includes a bed frame and base board or mattress. He said between 2018 and 2022, MOM investigated 19 cases on related issues in larger dormitories. None involved prohibition on the use of mattresses. In fact, one common scenario was that migrant workers discarded or misplaced mattresses or bed boards as they felt it was too warm or preferred to sleep on a harder surface. Dr Koh said migrant workers who face problems on the provision of mattresses can contact MOM to investigate by approaching officers on the ground or giving feedback through the FWMOMCare app.
