06:27 Min

The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck off Taiwan's eastern coast this morning has risen to nine, with more than 800 injured. It struck just south of Hualien city, a sparsely populated tourist hotspot known for its mountains, lakes and vulnerability to frequent earthquakes. This is the strongest quake to hit Taiwan in a quarter century. Search and rescue teams are scrambling to reach over 120 people trapped -- nearly 80 of them in tunnels. President Tsai Ing-wen vowed to spare no efforts to reach those still trapped. Victoria Jen reports from Taipei.
