Leon Perera in debate on securing Singaporeans’ jobs and livelihoods, and foreign talent policy

20:38 Min

Free trade agreements (FTAs) are important for Singapore's economic development and the well-being of its people, said MP Leon Perera in Parliament on Tuesday (Sep 14). He said it is necessary to review these agreements from time to time to ensure mutual benefit, as well as regularly study their impact and quantify the net economic benefits over costs. He also said it is vital for the Government to engage small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) during FTA negotiations and reviews. More can be done to gather feedback from SMEs on FTA negotiations and raise awareness on the opportunities available. The Government should regularly assess local FTA utilisation rates and perceived benefits, and share the information to help stakeholders understand how they are faring, said Mr Perera.
