Maliki Osman on banning sex offenders from being teachers

04:56 Min

Anyone who has committed “offences of moral turpitude”, including sexual offences and violent crimes, will not be hired by the Ministry of Education (MOE) as a teacher. Tutors at tuition or enrichment centres with 10 or more students must also be registered with MOE and have to declare if they have been convicted of any offence punishable by jail. However, freelance tutors and enrichment teachers do not need to be registered with MOE and are not covered by the regulations. The Government is reviewing how best to strengthen the screening framework for those working with children, including freelancers, said Second Minister for Education Maliki Osman. He was replying to an MP’s question in Parliament on Monday (Sep 12).
