Melvin Yong on Maintenance of Parents (Amendment) Bill
The Maintenance of Parents Act is a “legal recourse of last resort” to ensure that neglected and destitute parents receive some form of maintenance support from their children. Giving that description in Parliament on Tuesday (Jul 4), MP Melvin Yong said a review of the Act is timely to ensure it remains effective, as Singapore is set to become a super-aged society with more than 20 per cent of its population aged 65 and above. This means more cases of parents needing maintenance are likely to arise, with issues potentially becoming increasingly complicated. Mr Yong said the responsibility of caring for seniors must lie first with the family, as the Government can provide broad-based financial and social support but it can only do so much.
