Melvin Yong on supporting Singaporeans in starting and raising families
Despite various initiatives over the years to encourage more Singaporeans to start families, Singapore’s total fertility ratio (TFR) has continued to trend downwards, which means more can be done, said MP Melvin Yong in Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 5). He reiterated suggestions he had previously made on how to ease the anxieties many young couples face when making a decision on whether to start a family. These are to provide families with greater work-life balance, provide better support for parenthood including enhancing the quality and accessibility of preschool education, and to provide more support for lower-income families.
