Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim on availability of rental flats
There are about 8,000 vacant rental flats across Singapore. About half are not available for new applicants as they are in blocks that are due for redevelopment or reserved to house tenants of flats affected by redevelopment. Of the other half, about two-thirds need to be spruced up before they can be let out, said Minister of State for National Development Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 1). The pace of sprucing-up has been affected by manpower shortages in the construction sector during COVID-19. HDB aims to clear the backlog by the third quarter of this year. Dr Faishal said available rental flats may also be vacant as it takes time to match flats to applicants depending on flat type, location and ethnic quotas. He was answering MPs' questions.
