The rostering of nurses for shifts is managed by the hospitals, and the Ministry of Health (MOH) does not and should not interfere in this, said Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Health Rahayu Mahzam. Speaking in reply to an MP's questions in Parliament on Monday (Sep 12), she said hospitals are operational environments which have to address patient needs on a day-to-day basis. Generally, healthcare workers understand and will cover for each other if the workload gets heavier, she said. A rigid system will result in compromising on patient care, she added. She also said MOH will continue to work on various ways to support, develop and retain healthcare workers.
