Sharael Taha on Registration of Criminals (Amendment) Bill
A Bill put up for debate in Parliament on Monday (Sep 12) proposes to expand the DNA database available to police, to include people convicted of eligible crimes. MP Sharael Taha asked if the collection of DNA from such individuals will be compulsory or admissible, and whether forensic labs have the capacity to handle the influx of samples. He noted that it would be counter-productive if the collection of DNA as evidence ends up leading to a backlog and delay in investigations. Mr Sharael also wanted to know how DNA data will be kept secure from unauthorised access, modification or deletion, and whether there will be safeguards against future use of the information beyond the original intent of this Bill.
