Sun Xueling responds to motion on reinforcing Singapore’s position as a global transport hub
The government will roll out autonomous vehicles (AVs) at a gradual pace to give commuters and drivers time to adapt. Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling, who gave this assurance in parliament on Tuesday (Jul 7), said AVs should first be deployed to underserved areas and then progressively extended to new areas with clear transport needs. Sentosa, Tuas and Mandai are possible areas. The government is also expanding AV trials to other modes of transport, including public buses. It will begin piloting autonomous buses on Service 400 in Marina Bay and Service 191 in one-north. Turning to support for taxi and private-hire drivers, Ms Sun said the government will take a proactive approach to help workers adapt and hone their skills for the age of autonomy and AI. One of them is a manpower transition package offering career conversion programmes, training incentives and a one-stop web page with relevant resources for drivers.
