Conferences to examine his legacies, publications drawing inspiration from his values, as well as activities to engage a new generation of Singaporeans on his role in Singapore's history. These are some of the ideas being floated to mark the 100th anniversary of Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s birth. Mr Lee was born on Sep 16, 1923 and 2023 marks 100 years since the year of his birth. Some business leaders have proposed setting up a fund for private donations for educational causes. The Government is working with these parties to coordinate these efforts. Manpower Minister and Second Minister for Trade and Industry Tan See Leng gave this update in reply to an MP's question in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 7), on behalf of the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. He said the Government welcomes these ground-up initiatives and the spirit in which they have been conceived. He also highlighted some of the initiatives that are being planned by Government agencies. These include an extensive exhibition at the National Museum on Singapore's key historical milestones. As this year marks the 60th year of Singapore's greening journey since Mr Lee launched the first tree planting campaign in 1963, NParks will have activities to mark this milestone. The Monetary Authority of Singapore will be issuing a commemorative coin later in the year. Dr Tan said efforts to mark the 100th anniversary of Mr Lee's birth should serve to remind Singaporeans of the values that he stood for and the ideals that he and his fellow founding leaders fought for. "Through such efforts, we hope that a new generation of Singaporeans will be inspired and continue the work of our Pioneer and Merdeka generations in nation-building," he said.
