Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 6: Alex Yam on building a ‘we first’ national identity
In a global environment that is becoming more fragmented and uncertain, national resilience cannot rest only on economic strength or military capability but must also rest on something less visible but equally vital - social trust, said MP Alex Yam. A “we first’ national identity must be experienced in daily life and reinforced through habits, he said in parliament on Thursday (Mar 5). Singapore must begin with the young in the schools, as well as deepen a sense of shared responsibility at workplaces and in the neighbourhoods, he added. He wanted to know how the government intends to further embed the ethos of “we first” across multiple aspects of society.
