Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 1: Shawn Loh on a refreshed population strategy

02:54 Min

It is time for Singapore to fundamentally rethink its long-term population strategies and plans, said MP Shawn Loh in parliament on Thursday (Feb 26). He said if citizen births continue to decline, there will come a day when the number of new citizenships given to immigrants exceeds the number of Singaporean babies born. He said Singapore must increase the emphasis on assimilation within its immigration framework. He added that with advances in technology, intelligent robots can help reduce the country’s reliance on foreign labour.
