Wan Rizal on Criminal Law (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill

10:27 Min

In parliament on Tuesday (Nov 4), MP Wan Rizal welcomed moves to criminalise the doxxing of a public servant when accompanied by a falsehood and to remove the need to prove that they suffered harassment or distress. However, he asked for confirmation that offenders cannot escape liability by claiming a lie was disguised in humour or sarcasm. He also sought clarity on the distinction between using the proposed doxxing with falsehood offence versus invoking the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA). Dr Wan Rizal also wanted to know if the new protections will extend to outsourced essential workers such as cleaners, healthcare assistants or transport enforcement officers who perform public-facing duties.
