05:50 Min

DNA evidence can be used to prove innocence as well as guilt, said MP Wan Rizal, welcoming a proposal to allow individuals to voluntarily provide DNA to the police. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Sep 12), he also supported introducing penalties for suspects who refuse to provide their samples without a reasonable excuse. However, he also raised several areas of concern over plans to enhance the police DNA database to better solve crimes. They include the possibility of partial matches involving relatives or doppelgangers, and how the police will protect against contamination of samples, data storage security risks and even DNA fabrication.
