White Paper on Singapore Women’s Development: Darryl David on challenges faced by working mums and back-to-work mums
Mid-career women often suffer a widening career gap with men because of maternity and family commitments. Flexible work arrangements could enable them to have “the best of both worlds”, but if such arrangements go on too long, they run the risk of professional isolation. Making the point in Parliament on Tuesday (Apr 5), MP Darryl David said companies must proactively help women manage this risk. One way is to implement a system of corporate mentorship and sponsorship for female executives. This will give them continued access to career guidance, high-visibility projects and professional networks within the company and across the industry. Mr David also called for specialised support for mothers returning to the workforce. He suggested that NTUC could offer targeted career coaching and skills upgrading.
