White Paper on Singapore Women’s Development: He Ting Ru on room for improvement
The Workers’ Party supports the spirit of the motion on the White Paper on Singapore Women’s Development and its overarching goal to achieve a fairer, more inclusive society. However, it feels there was too little time between the release of the Paper and the debate in Parliament, and that improvements can be made. These points were raised by MP He Ting Ru in the House on Tuesday (Apr 5). Rather than specifically targeting Singapore women, she said the principles and aspirations in the Paper should form a blueprint of “what we as a society stand for and what we value, no matter who you are”. She offered suggestions on various topics. They included doing more to close the gender pay gap, looking into the scope of the phenomenon known as the “pink tax” in Singapore, addressing a “research gap” on medical and health issues affecting women, and ensuring a conscious effort in education to challenge gender stereotypes.
