White Paper on Singapore Women’s Development: Jessica Tan on women in growth sectors, STEM roles

14:22 Min

It is imperative for businesses to attract and retain women in the growth sectors, such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), said MP Jessica Tan. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Apr 5), she said as companies transform their businesses amid the growing importance of technology, STEM roles will be in demand. Companies need to hire more women, and "we need to make sure that women want to be in these roles", she said. It makes good business sense for companies to hire women in STEM roles. If they do not, they are missing out on tapping into half the talent pool, she said. Turning to flexible work arrangements, she asked "why wait" until 2024 to introduce a new set of tripartite guidelines. It would be one-and-a-half years before this happens. Start earlier, learn and refine from these experiences, she suggested.
