White Paper on Singapore Women’s Development: Shahira Abdullah on support for women in the workforce
Women should not be discouraged from taking their statutorily mandated maternity leave for fear of jeopardising their career progression. Will specific fair employment legislation be introduced to protect women who go on maternity leave? Flexible work arrangements (FWAs) should not solely be used by women as the perceived cost of hiring them will increase. Are there plans to ensure increased utilisation of FWAs by both women and men? These questions were raised by NMP Shahira Abdullah in Parliament on Tuesday (Apr 5). She also called for some amount of paternity leave to be made compulsory, noting that a 2021 study showed that men in lower-income jobs were less likely to use their paternity leave, placing a bigger burden on the women in these households.
