White Paper on Singapore Women’s Development: Vikram Nair on 'gender-neutral' support in work and caregiving
Flexible work arrangements should be made equally available to men and women to be effective. If they apply only to women, they may have the effect of forcing women to continue to bear the caregiving load, said MP Vikram Nair. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Apr 5), he also suggested that grants and support be provided on a "gender-neutral" basis, so that if the caregiver at home is the man, he does not miss out on this support. He said it may help to have support networks that are specific to male caregivers, as they may face a different form of stigma from female caregivers. He stressed that men who support their wives with their aspirations should be celebrated and if such behaviour gets "more normalised", this will have a much stronger impact on the overall journey to gender equality.
