Xie Yao Quan on Platform Workers Bill
The Platform Workers Bill is “landmark” not only for what it will achieve for the rights and protection of platform workers if passed, but also for how it was achieved in the first place, which was only possible because of Singapore’s unique tripartism. MP Xie Yao Quan said this in Parliament on Tuesday (Sep 10). He said the real work will lie ahead in operationalising the provisions and he hopes collective bargaining will address two key issues. One - fair pay, where he suggested that a platform worker should on average be no worse off than a local employee receiving protection and assurance on wage floors as provided for under the Local Qualifying Scheme (LQS) wage schedule. Two - advancing pay progression by working towards establishing a skills ladder, job ladder and pay ladder in platform work. This has no precedent anywhere in the world but if anyone can take a shot and do it, it is Singapore, Mr Xie said.
