Yeo Wan Ling on amendment bills for tougher laws to tackle money mules, Singpass abusers
“Scams get to the best of us”, no longer being easily recognisable but reaching people in a host of ways that can appear subtle and very genuine. Making this point in Parliament on Tuesday (May 9), MP Yeo Wan Ling said that while she supports proposed new laws to crack down on money mules and those who abuse Singpass credentials for scams, she worries about the potential repercussions of placing the onus on individuals to take responsibility for how they dispense their personal data and for transactions through their accounts. In particular, she is concerned for those who are not tech natives, such as seniors and people with special needs and mental disabilities. Ms Yeo said this may set back digital inclusion for seniors who already “view online spaces with scepticism”. She also asked about plans to involve more stakeholders, especially businesses, in efforts to improve anti-scam awareness and protection.
