Yip Hon Weng on Public Defenders Bill

11:10 Min

With the proposed creation of a Public Defender’s Office (PDO) in Singapore, clearer delineation is needed between the legal help channels available to low-income individuals who face criminal proceedings, said MP Yip Hon Weng in Parliament on Monday (Aug 1). Pointing to a potential overlap and redundancy between the PDO and the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme, he suggested that each should take on different types of cases. Mr Yip also questioned the exclusion of certain offences, such as serious traffic offences, from PDO aid, and asked for more details on how the Government will ensure that the PDO’s work does not become a strain on the public purse.
