#Greenhacks preliminary recommendations
Based on the #GreenHacks panel’s research and engagements, the lack of public awareness and willingness to recycle right emerged as top barriers to good recycling.
To address this issue, the #GreenHacks panel proposes a three-pronged approach of: Information, Infrastructure and Involvement. These include: Providing better information through a simplified product labelling scheme for recyclables, improving infrastructure efficiency through introducing segregated waste bins and/or waste bags for different types of recyclables, and working with the community to improve public education and awareness of recycling through campaigns that teach proper recycling methods.
The #GreenHacks panel believes these strategies can guide the public to recycle right, improve recycling rates and reduce contamination rates.

PRELIMINARY RECOMMENDATIONS

of Singaporeans surveyed were unsure about how to sort recyclable materials.
INFORMATION | Product Labelling Scheme
- Introduce simplified and standardised recycling labels, using colours, shapes and/or patterns on products and bins, to deepen public understanding of what can or cannot be recycled.
- This makes it easier to recycle correctly, improves recycling rates and reduces recycling contamination in Singapore.
PRELIMINARY RECOMMENDATIONS

of Singaporeans surveyed would recycle more if they had a better understanding of the positive social and environmental effects of recycling.
INFRASTRUCTURE | Segregated Recycling Bin Transition
- Introduce segregated bins and/or waste bags to optimise the collection of recyclables and improve upstream recycling yield rate.
- Encourage accurate sorting to minimise additional sorting and cleaning, and improve overall system efficiency with reduced contamination.
PRELIMINARY RECOMMENDATIONS

INVOLVEMENT | Community Engagement
- Motivate individuals to recycle more by providing easier access to information.
- Conduct targeted education and public engagements, and collaborate with community organisations like grassroots, places of worship, community clubs and schools to promote good recycling practices.

MORE ABOUT
#GREENHACKS

As the climate evolves and the planet’s future becomes more uncertain, sustainability has become a leading principle for development. The #GreenHacks panel found camaraderie among like-minded individuals with a common purpose to enhance sustainability through increasing public education efforts and improving recycling systems and practices.
Their passion for sustainability stems from concerns about future generations of Singaporeans, as they face an increasingly challenging world with limited resources. Together, they seek to explore ways to create impact in Singapore’s recycling scene, and highlight the far-reaching impact of individual and community contributions towards building a sustainable future.
