Crayfish, scallop from Song Fish Dealer recalled by SFA

SINGAPORE: Song Fish Dealer has been directed on Thursday (Jun 30) to recall its crayfish and half shell scallop after they were found to contain cadmium at levels exceeding the limit stated in Singapore's food regulations.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said in a news release that the recall is a precautionary measure.

"Heavy metals such as mercury, lead, arsenic and cadmium are naturally present in the environment and can enter our food when the animals and plants we eat come into contact with water, soil and the seabed," said SFA.

"Shellfish in particular grow on the ocean floor and can accumulate heavy metals that have sunk to the bottom. Based on levels detected, once-off consumption of the affected products is unlikely to be of food safety concern.

"However, long-term intake of high levels of cadmium may cause renal dysfunction, bone demineralisation and increased risk of cancer in the lung, endometrium, bladder, and breast."

The products are:

  • Crayfish Large Cut with a use-by date of Feb 4, 2023, originating from Indonesia
  • Crayfish Medium Cut with a use-by date of May 7, 2023, originating from Indonesia
  • Half Shell Scallop, with a best-before date of Aug 12, 2023, originating from China
