 Johor Sultan to meet President Halimah, PM Lee during official visit to Singapore

SINGAPORE: Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar will make an official visit to Singapore this week at the invitation of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on Tuesday (Jul 19). 

During his visit from Wednesday to Friday, Sultan Ibrahim will call on President Halimah Yacob and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

He will also meet Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for Social Policies Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong. Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean was also scheduled to meet with Sultan Ibrahim before Mr Teo tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

The Sultan of Johor will be accompanied by his wife, Raja Zarith Sofiah, crown prince Tunku Ismail and his wife Che' Puan Besar Khaleeda, Johor's chief minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi and other state officials. 

On Wednesday, Sultan Ibrahim will be conferred an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws by the National University of Singapore (NUS) at the Istana in recognition of his contributions to the strengthening of ties between Singapore and Johor, said MFA. 

Sultan Ibrahim and his wife will also have a new orchid hybrid, the Dendrobium Ibrahim Zarith, named in their honour, said MFA. 

The official itinerary also includes a visit to the site of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link Woodlands North terminus, Sembawang Air Base, and the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute.

The Johor Sultan's visit comes two months after Mr Lee was conferred the highest honour in the state of Johor during a visit in May. 

Mr Lee received the First Class, Grand Commander of the Order, Dato’ Sri Paduka Mahkota Johor (SPMJ – Order of the Crown of Johor) from the Sultan of Johor.

His wife, Mdm Ho Ching, received the First Class, Grand Commander of the Order, Dato’ Sri Mulia Sultan Ibrahim Johor (SMIJ – Order of Sultan Ibrahim of Johor).
