Ang Wei Neng on Transport Sector (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill
Establish a COE-PT Fund so that Singaporeans who take public transport (PT) because they cannot own a car can still see tangible, direct benefits from the COE system. MP Ang Wei Neng made this suggestion in parliament on Tuesday (Oct 14). He noted that with Category A prices recently hitting record highs, COE revenue for the Ministry of Transport (MOT) is projected to “dwarf” the S$4.7 billion collected in 2024, when operating expenditure was S$2.5 billion. Mr Ang said a COE-PT Fund could earmark a percentage of COE revenue to enhance the public transport ecosystem, over and above MOT’s operating budget. The money could be used to directly offset part of annual fare increases and fund asset renewal across the public transport network, accelerate the building of covered linkways and enhance the Public Transport Voucher scheme to better support low-income families.
