Carrie Tan on Women’s Charter (Amendment) Bill

11:18 Min

Couples are getting married at a later age and if they find that they are not the right fit, allowing them to apply for divorce only after three years of marriage is “precious time lost”, said MP Carrie Tan in Parliament on Monday (Jan 10). She suggested reducing the period to one year, if data shows that most unions end in divorce anyway after the Deed of Separation period. Ms Tan also suggested changing the name of the Women’s Charter to "Family Charter", to reflect its intention to protect the rights of both women and men in the context of family matters. She said it would correct the prevailing impression that family law favours women over men, and send an important signal to reduce the animosity often seen in divorce proceedings.
