Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 4: Foo Mee Har on Continuing Education and Training
Continuing Education and Training (CET) needs to become a “strategic pillar” in Singapore’s human capital development. For this to happen, funding, operating and accreditation frameworks must be enhanced, said MP Foo Mee Har in Parliament on Monday (Mar 7). She pointed out that less than 10 per cent of the Ministry of Education’s total budget for FY2022 is allocated to SkillsFuture-related programmes. She asked what a more reasonable amount would be to achieve the necessary outcomes, and what contribution employers should be expected to make. Ms Foo also suggested making study leave a part of employment terms, and implementing industry accreditation standards and a common set of CET qualifications so that CET credentials translate to job opportunities and career growth.
