Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 5: S Iswaran on support for electric vehicle adoption
Singapore’s land transport carbon emissions peaked at 7.7 million tonnes in 2016 and the Government now aims to reduce emissions by 80 per cent from that peak, by around the middle of this century. Electrification of vehicles is a key factor in meeting this “ambitious goal”, said Transport Minister S Iswaran in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 8). To that end, he outlined several initiatives. To make every HDB town “EV-ready” by 2025, electric vehicle charging points will be installed in nearly 2,000 HDB car parks over the next three to four years. New legislation will be introduced to regulate EV charging. To support EV adoption, more mass-market electric cars will fall under COE Category A. Half of Singapore’s public bus and taxi fleets will be electric by 2030. Mr Iswaran also revealed that solar panels will be installed at locations such as rail and bus deports, covered linkways and pedestrian overhead bridges.
