Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 4: Rachel Ong on advisory on reasonable accommodation

01:52 Min

It is imperative that individuals with disabilities are not unfairly excluded from job opportunities simply because they require reasonable accommodations, said MP Rachel Ong. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Mar 4), she said these accommodations are crucial for both employers and employees to achieve their full potential and drive business success. They can encompass a wide variety of adjustments, such as physical modifications, changes to job task, technological aids, as well as fostering understanding and support from colleagues, she added. Ms Ong said while some employers may see reasonable accommodations as optional, these are essential for the livelihoods of persons with disabilities. As the advisory on reasonable accommodations is currently in the form of guidance rather than a legal requirement, it is crucial to monitor its implementation and effectiveness amongst employers, as well as its impact on individuals with disabilities, she said. She asked the Ministry of Manpower to provide updates on the rollout of this advisory to employers.
