Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 3: Denise Phua on students with Special Educational Needs

03:43 Min

Two areas need attention in the mainstream school setting for students with Special Educational Needs, said MP Denise Phua. Firstly, inclusion quality remains uneven and there should be a clearer national framework that defines what every classroom teacher must be able to do, what school-based specialists provide and what requires multi-disciplinary intervention. Secondly, life skills must be intentionally taught, not treated as optional add-ons. Speaking in parliament on Monday (Mar 2), she stressed the need for a lifelong learning model that integrates academic foundations with work readiness and vocational exposure and serves as a launch pad for adulthood.
