Gan Siow Huang on medical and accident insurance coverage for migrant domestic workers
Employers are responsible for the medical expenses of their migrant domestic workers (MDWs) and have to ensure that they have medical insurance. In the last five years, about 95 per cent of all hospitalisation bills by MDWs fell within S$15,000, which was the minimum insurance coverage required before Jul 1 this year. The Ministry of Manpower enhanced the medical insurance requirements for new policies or renewals from Jul 1. The higher annual claim limit of S$60,000 is estimated to cover about 99 per cent of all bills. Minister of State for Manpower Gan Siow Huang, who highlighted this change in reply to an MP’s questions in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 22), urged employers of MDWs to transition to the enhanced medical insurance early, even if their existing medical insurance policy is not due for renewal yet. She said this will better protect employers against large unforeseen medical bills.
