Motion: Syed Harun Alhabsyi on suitability of Pritam Singh as Leader of the Opposition
The role of Leader of the Opposition comes with great responsibility as well as privileges, and his conduct directly influences public perception of Singapore’s entire parliamentary system. He must therefore adhere to the highest ethical standards. Senior Parliamentary Secretary Syed Harun Alhabsyi made these points in the House on Wednesday (Jan 14). He added that Mr Pritam Singh had been given ample opportunity to clear the air and defend the charges against him through due process. Dr Harun said it falls to parliament to “record its regret and dismay” on Mr Singh’s actions and “draw a line in the sand” that his conduct is unacceptable.
