Vivian Balakrishnan on preventing transfer of arms and dual-use items to Myanmar
Singapore has decided to prohibit the transfer of arms to Myanmar. It has also decided not to authorise the transfer of dual-use items which have been assessed to have potential military application to Myanmar, where there is a serious risk that they may be used to inflict violence against unarmed civilians. Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan highlighted this in reply to an MP's question in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 14). He said Singapore will not hesitate to take action against those who contravene its laws, including the transfer and brokering of strategic goods and technology. He said Singapore remains committed to working with fellow ASEAN member states and United Nations member states to facilitate peace and national reconciliation in Myanmar.
