Wan Rizal on Singapore’s COVID-19 response
The COVID-19 pandemic was a “high-anxiety period”, yet lockdown measures created barriers to accessing mental health care, said MP Wan Rizal in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 21). He proposed forming “Mental Health Community Emergency Preparedness Teams” comprising members of the public. These would be part of a network, connected online, to ensure that the first level of mental health support remains accessible during a pandemic. He also proposed creating a “Central Mental Health Ops Centre”, to be activated only during a pandemic. Dr Wan Rizal also spoke about bolstering resilience in the education system. He called for home-based learning to be a new norm and for multiple online learning platforms to be set up. He also suggested enlisting parent volunteers to help teachers with administrative or additional duties during a pandemic, such as taking attendance and contact tracing.
