Yip Hon Weng on Free Trade Zones (Amendment) Bill

02:10 Min

In Parliament on Wednesday (Oct 4), MP Yip Hon Weng raised several questions about proposed changes to laws governing Singapore’s free trade zones (FTZs). He asked about the conditions for appointing private entities to oversee the country’s 10 FTZs and what mechanisms are in place for potential revocation of licences, as well as whether there are plans to set up more FTZs in future. With the delegation of greater powers to the Director-General of Customs, he asked if appeals will be reviewed by the minister in charge if the DG is considered to have acted unreasonably. He also wanted to know how the authorities will ensure that data collected in FTZs is accurate and whether the information can be disclosed to foreign law enforcement agencies such as Interpol without the consent of those involved.
