SINGAPORE: After 17 years in business, Cathay Cineplexes in AMK Hub will cease operations at the end of June - the company's fourth cinema closure in the last two years.

"As our lease comes to an end, our last day of operations will be Jun 30, 2024," Cathay Cineplexes announced in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Jun 19), adding that screenings will continue to take place on Jun 30 itself, which falls on a Sunday.

Following the closure at AMK Hub, Cathay Cineplexes will have five remaining outlets in Singapore - at Causeway Point, Downtown East, West Mall, JEM and Century Square.

When the Parkway Parade outlet closed in August 2023, mm2 Asia, which owns Cathay Cineplexes, said the decision was part of the group's strategy to "right-size the cinema business in Singapore".

In response to CNA's queries, Cathay Cineplexes on Thursday thanked its studio partners and suppliers for their continued support and understanding.

"There will be no disruption of services at the other Cathay Cineplexes outlets in Singapore," it said. "Stay tuned for exciting news on our new outlets coming up."

The statement did not specify the reasons behind the closure at AMK Hub. Cathay Cineplexes also did not respond to CNA's questions about its employees at AMK Hub as well as cinema attendance.

CNA has asked AMK Hub for more information on the impending closure.

The cinema at AMK Hub first opened its doors on Jun 16, 2007, featuring eight movie halls and 1,800 seats, according to Cathay Organisation.

From now until Jun 30, Cathay Cineplexes is offering standard tickets at S$10 at the Ang Mo Kio mall, a discount from the usual price of between S$11 and S$16.50.
