Alex Yam on Online Safety (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill
Singapore should stipulate a timeframe within which egregious online content must be taken down before it can do further harm - this was the call from MP Alex Yam, who cited a 24-hour takedown window set by Australia as an example. He also urged the Government to consider including private messaging, chat and gaming platforms under its proposed new law to deal with harmful online content. Apart from the necessary regulations, he said more can be done to empower all users - adults and children - to do “self-policing”. Mr Yam spoke in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 9).
