Budget 2023 debate: Koh Lian Pin on addressing climate change and sustainability

15:46 Min

We need to take climate change and sustainability seriously - not to save the planet, but to save ourselves; to ensure a liveable Singapore for current and future generations. Making the point in Parliament on Thursday (Feb 23), NMP Koh Lian Pin said this may require us to constantly reflect on our assumptions, priorities and ways of life. However, as Singapore addresses the impact of climate change, it must ensure that the most vulnerable in society are well-supported and the able are contributing appropriately. At the same time, climate and sustainability efforts have to be considered in light of other societal priorities, especially where common and limited resources are involved. Prof Koh added that by thinking and acting beyond its geographical constraints as a small island state, Singapore can create climate impacts beyond its borders.
