Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 7: Edwin Tong on a strong, caring and inclusive Singapore
In these unprecedentedly difficult times, Singapore will redouble its efforts to fortify the connections that bring its people together. Making that pledge in Parliament on Thursday (Mar 10), Culture, Community and Youth Minister Edwin Tong outlined various ways to make this happen. He said the arts, heritage and sports sectors are the “critical social glue” that binds Singaporeans and gives them a sense of belonging. Therefore another S$12 million will go towards supporting the arts and culture sector in FY2022, to build on gains made from the earlier COVID-19 resilience package. Conditions for self-employed persons in the sector will be enhanced. Meanwhile, S$20 million will be committed to “Bring Sport Back”, including safely reintroducing mass participation events and ramping up community programmes. A Para Sport Academy will be launched to give persons with disabilities more opportunities to pursue their sporting ambitions at a competitive level. Mr Tong announced reviews of the Community Dispute Management Framework and the Inter-Racial and Religious Confidence Circles. He also revealed that the National Heritage Board is working towards gazetting the Padang as a national monument on National Day this year.
