Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 7: Dennis Tan on use of Chinese dialects
In Parliament on Monday (Mar 6), MP Dennis Tan expressed concern over the number of Singaporeans below the age of 50 who will be conversant in Chinese dialects in 20 or 30 years. He said that beyond the speaking of dialect, it is important to preserve knowledge among all Singaporean-Chinese of the cultural heritage of the dialect groups. He also suggested that dialects be offered as a third language option at the Ministry of Education Language Centre and Institutes of Higher Learning to instil interest and promote knowledge of these groups. He asked if the Government can do more to enhance the learning and speaking of dialects as well as promote the customs, practices and culture of the different dialect groups among younger Singaporeans. He also wanted to know if the Government would also consider lifting the ban on TV and radio dialect programmes.
