Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 2: Murali Pillai on Singapore’s position as a legal hub
In Parliament on Thursday (Feb 29), Speaker Seah Kian Peng dealt with the expenditure estimates for the Ministry of Law (MinLaw). Following that, MP Murali Pillai told the House that Singapore is facing stiffer competition as a global legal hub. He asked about MinLaw’s plans to ensure that the country maintains its position and he offered several suggestions. These include deepening the bench strength of Singaporean and Singapore-based arbitrators so that they can more regularly feature in high-value arbitrations, and allowing the execution of electronic deeds. Mr Murali said Singapore could also be “more tightly woven into the global legal system”. He recommended that it consider acceding to the 2019 Hague Judgments Convention, to strengthen the ability of Singapore judgments to be recognised and enforced in the European Union.
