Debate on President’s Address: Yip Hon Weng on productive longevity
Singapore’s ageing population means productive longevity is no longer optional but an absolute necessity, said MP Yip Hon Weng in Parliament on Tuesday (Apr 18). He elaborated on three critical ways to achieve this. First, supporting seniors to work longer if they have the desire and good health to do so. This means creating quality jobs for them and introducing more flexible work options, which he urged the Government to take the lead on. Second, increasing volunteerism rates among seniors so they can stay active, pick up new interests and share their experience and skills. Third, enabling care by giving informal caregivers more support and professionalising caregiving as a career to meet growing demand. Mr Yip said Singaporeans must reframe their concept of ageing - it is happening right now, to all of us, and society must think of ageing not as a problem, but as an opportunity; and about seniors not as liabilities, but as resources.
