He Ting Ru on advancing mental health
Singapore needs to look beyond reducing rates of mental ill health and discuss how to elevate mental well-being, said MP He Ting Ru in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 6). She spoke on three broad areas - making a flourishing society an objective in policy formulation, promoting good nutrition as part of a national mental health and well-being strategy, and doing more to remove structural barriers to mental health support and therapy. Ms He urged the Government to tap research studies to inform policymaking to help Singaporeans identify and build on their strengths, and better support families to thrive. She said the ability to eat for a healthy brain must not be exclusive to those with greater economic means. So, for example, in its drive to achieve 30 per cent food self-sufficiency by 2030, Singapore must ensure that the bulk of home-produced food meets nutritional criteria. Ms He also called for guidelines to prohibit insurers from declining applications on the basis of mental health conditions or disabilities, and for better regulation of mental health workers to ensure at least a baseline level of training, expertise and ethical practice.
