Tan Kiat How on chicken rearing in HDB and private residential estates
From 2017 to 2021, agencies and town councils received about 2,400 pieces of feedback about chickens in HDB estates. There were about 1,700 pieces of feedback for private residential estates. Senior Minister of State for National Development Tan Kiat How said this in reply to an MP's question in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 9). He said generally, the limit on poultry that can be reared in premises on a non-commercial basis is 10. Poultry rearing is not allowed for HDB flats for public health reasons and to manage disamenities. Mr Tan said HDB acts on complaints and works closely with agencies to engage flat owners to rehome the chickens where necessary. Private residential owners who keep chickens on their property have to minimise any inconveniences to their neighbours, such as noise and smell. Mr Tan said NParks will continue to work with its partners to raise public awareness on responsible pet ownership. NParks and HDB review pet ownership policies regularly to safeguard public health while balancing the needs of different segments of the community, he added.
